Idealab is the longest-running startup studio of its kind, founded in 1996 to generate company ideas internally and staff them rather than to fund founders arriving from outside.
The model it established — ideas originating in-house, teams assembled around them, shared operational infrastructure — has since been copied by studios worldwide.
Idealab created Citysearch and GoTo.com, the latter of which established the paid search auction model that became the economic foundation of the modern search industry.
Its recent work has shifted heavily toward energy, solar, and climate technology.
