COO

The chief operating officer runs day-to-day execution, turning strategy into functioning process.

What The Role Does

The chief operating officer is responsible for the company running well. The scope varies more than any other executive role — in some companies it covers everything outside product and engineering; in others it is narrowly operational.

The role is often created when a CEO's time is being consumed by internal execution at the expense of strategy, capital, and external work.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Owning execution against company objectives
  • Building the operating rhythm — planning cycles, reviews, metrics
  • Overseeing functions such as support, delivery, and operations
  • Process design and organisational scaling
  • Frequently acting as a direct partner to the CEO

What Investors Look For

  • Clear division of responsibility between CEO and COO
  • Demonstrated ability to build process without smothering speed
  • Track record of scaling teams through a similar stage
  • Metrics discipline and follow-through
  • Complementary rather than duplicated strengths relative to the CEO
