Overview of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic with no permanent population, occupied only by research station staff and a small government presence.
Context
The territory was historically a centre of the whaling industry, and the abandoned stations at Grytviken and elsewhere remain as heritage sites.
Today its principal economic activity is the licensing of tightly managed fisheries, particularly toothfish and krill, alongside limited expedition tourism.
The surrounding waters form one of the largest marine protected areas in the world.
What Investors Should Note
There is no resident commercial market. Fisheries licensing is administered by the territorial government.
